Big Red Machine, a project by Aaron Dessner (The National) and Justin Vernon (Bon Iver), has released its second album, *How Long Do You Think It’s Gonna Last?*. The album includes the single “Renegade,” featuring Taylor Swift, among other tracks. ● Guest Artists: Anaïs Mitchell, Robin Pecknold (Fleet Foxes), Taylor Swift, Ilze, Naeem, Sharon Van Etten, Lisa Hannigan, Shara Nova (My Brightest Diamond), La Force, Ben Howard, This Is the Kit Aaron Dessner learned to play various instruments alongside his brother Bryce in a basement in the suburbs of Cincinnati from a young age, and has always sought emotional outlets and deep human connections through music. As the principal songwriter for The National, founder of various festivals, and collaborator on two Taylor Swift albums recorded at his New York studio, Long Pond… through these endeavors, Dessner has built a one-of-a-kind community of musicians. His rich spirit and desire to “move music forward” can be felt most deeply in the second album by Big Red Machine, *How Long Do You Think It’s Gonna Last?*, which he launched in 2008 with Bon Iver’s Justin Vernon. Big Red Machine—which Dessner says began as a project for their own enjoyment—released its self-titled debut album in 2018. This album, which Dessner calls “structured experimentalism,” evolved from improvisation and focused on creating tracks that work well in a live setting. In 2019, when Vernon visited Long Pond, new material for Big Red Machine began to take shape. During the first week, songs like “Reese,” “8:22 a.m.,” and “Latter Days” (the opener featuring Vernon and Anais Mitchell on vocals) were written, and the loss of childhood innocence and nostalgia expressed in “Latter Days” became a defining theme throughout the album. Over the following months, the two met as often as possible to continue their work. In the early days of the pandemic, Taylor Swift reached out to Dessner, and the two began a collaboration that would later become *Folklore* and *Evermore*. During this period, which he describes as a “creative blur,” Dessner was working simultaneously on projects with Swift and Big Red Machine. (1/2)
