Ship to Shore, an album based on and reaching out to his own musical roots, is now available.When Richard Thompson began writing songs for his latest album, Ship to Shore, he was intuitively drawn to his musical roots. And he embraced them to create a deep and diverse collection of 12 songs that incorporate a variety of styles, genres, and eras, but never lose their Richard Thompson-ness. The Motown-style rhythm of "Trust" rumbles along. Turnstile Casanova" rocks with straight-ahead riffs. The drone-tinged "The Old Pack Mule" is an old man's song inspired by 1600s European music, while "Life's a Bloody Show" is an ode to snake oil salesmen and con artists. I liked the idea of having a strong base from which to reach out."I consider my base to be traditional English music, but there is also Scottish music and Irish music. There is also jazz, country, and classical music. I think, once you establish your base, you can reach out anywhere. Wherever I decide to go musically, it's me that rings out," says Thompson.
