Description:
The Height of Sophistication! A Collection of Concertos by C.P.E. Bach 2014 marks the 300th anniversary of the birth of Carl Philipp Emanuel Bach. Various concerts are being held throughout Germany to celebrate this anniversary year. Among the composers of the Berlin School who flourished at the court of Frederick the Great, C.P.E. Bach stood out for his exceptional originality. His music is highly refined, characterized by delicate expression and bold harmonies. This album features a collection of concertos for flute, cello, and oboe performed by the early music ensemble Il Gardellino, with Ryo Terakobe serving as concertmaster. The Flute Concerto in D major was previously known as the Harpsichord Concerto in D major; the flute version was rediscovered in 1999. The five previously known flute concertos were arrangements of harpsichord concertos made by the composer himself, and it is believed that the flute version of this work may have been composed first as well. Combining a sense of joy with the characteristics of refined court music, Jan de Winne’s soft and light playing on the traverso resonates beautifully. Next is the Cello Concerto in A minor, one of three surviving cello concertos by the composer. With its captivating themes and elegant sound—a true showcase of C.P.E. Bach’s artistry—this piece captivates the listener with Emmanuel Balsa’s brilliant performance. He also composed two oboe concertos; this work in B-flat major is notable for its bright, rich sound that showcases the oboe, and it is a piece in which the virtuosity of the masterful Marcel Ponselle truly shines.
