Buxtehude was the greatest musician of the North German organ school and the greatest influence on J.S. Bach's organ music. Buxtehude, organist at St. Mary's Church in Lübeck, was a very popular musician at the time, so much so that the 20-year-old J.S. Bach walked 400 km to Lübeck to hear Buxtehude's "Evening Music," and even extended his four-week vacation to four months without permission.
