Boris Belman, Koza, and Greensmith Speak Eloquently Through Brahms’s Two Sonatas, Op. 120, and Trio, Op. 114! Pianist Boris Berman, who has been intensively recording Brahms’s works in recent years, has recorded the Two Sonatas, Op. 120, and the Trio, Op. 114. Boris Berman was born in 1948. He studied under Oborin at the Moscow Conservatory, emigrated to Israel in 1973, and has been based in the United States since 1979. While continuing his performing career, he has taught piano at Indiana University and Yale University, earning worldwide acclaim as a distinguished teacher. It can be said that the three Brahms works included on this album would likely never have been composed had it not been for the friendship between the clarinetist Richard Mühlfeld (1856–1907) and Brahms. However, Brahms clearly indicated in each score that the parts could be substituted for viola. The viola part is performed by Ettore Cozza, renowned for his numerous recordings of arrangements. Cozza has performed with Berman for many years, including on their album of Schumann and Brahms (50-1511). The cello part is performed by Clive Greensmith, who served as the final cellist of the Tokyo Quartet. Please enjoy these late works by Brahms, eloquently interpreted by these master musicians.
