In celebration of his 80th birthday in 2025, all three of his recordings for RCA have been remastered and released! Mischa Dichter was born in Shanghai in 1945 to Polish-Jewish parents who fled the city during World War II; he moved with his family to Los Angeles, California at age 2 and began piano lessons at age 5. He studied with Aube Zerko, a student of Artur Schnabel, who established Schnabel's intensive practice plan and thorough approach to musical analysis. He studied with Rosina Levin at the Juilliard School of Music in New York City. While at Juilliard, Schnabel won a silver medal at the 1966 International Tchaikovsky Competition in Moscow, which launched his career as an international musician. Soon after, his performance of Tchaikovsky's Piano Concerto No. 1 at Tanglewood with the Boston Symphony Orchestra conducted by Erich Reinsdorf was broadcast live nationally on NBC and later recorded by RCA. It was perhaps inevitable that his RCA debut should be a Tchaikovsky concerto, as it was the work that made Van Cliburn, the first winner of the Tchaikovsky Competition, an international star.Dichter also made his debut in 1968 performing the same piece with the New York Philharmonic under Leonard Bernstein, and soon after performed with the Berlin Philharmonic, the Amsterdam Concertgebouw Orchestra (now the Royal Concertgebouw Orchestra), and major orchestras in London and the United States. He has also recorded albums of Brahms and Stravinsky, Beethoven and Schubert for RCA. Artur Rubinstein famously praised Dichter's Schubert and invited him to his home in Paris, where he was filmed performing Schubert's B-flat minor Sonata D960 in front of Rubinstein. He has an equally special attachment to the A major Sonata D 959, saying, "For me, this piece still represents the sight and sound of paradise." Dichter has contributed articles to major publications, including The New York Times. He has appeared frequently on national television, hosted a one-hour European television documentary, and was featured with his dog, Thunder, in the film "My Dog: An Unconventional Love Story.
