"Skin," the debut album by UK-based neo-soul singer-songwriter Joy Crookes Joy Crookes was born in South London, England, in 1998 to an Irish father and a Bangladeshi mother. At age 15, her cover of a Ray Charles song uploaded to a video-sharing site garnered significant attention, and she made her debut at age 17 with the single “New Manhattan.” Since then, she has garnered significant attention in the UK music scene, including a nomination for the BBC’s “Sound of 2020” and being named “Rising Star” at the 2020 Brit Awards. Speaking about her debut album *Skin*, released amid high anticipation, she says, “This landmark debut album is a work I’m very proud of; it’s an autobiographical work that covers themes ranging from casual sex to intergenerational trauma, abuse of power, and mental health.” The recording was a collaborative effort with producer BlueMay, taking place at London’s Conk Studios—known for being founded by The Kinks—while the string recordings were done at Abbey Road Studios’ famous Studio 2. Joy Crooks’ smoky, distinctive vocals, combined with backing tracks brimming with vintage soul, create a melancholic sound reminiscent of Amy Winehouse. The striking album artwork was created by photographer Carlota Guerrero, who also designed the cover for Solange’s *A Seat at the Table*. This album is highly recommended for fans of UK neo-soul singers such as Celeste, NAO, and Lianne La Havas.
