Description:
The third sound recording of the trio of Bill Evans, Eddie Gomez, and Jack DiJohnette at their best! An amazing soundtrack has been unearthed by Resonance and is once again seeing the light of day. The trio of Evans, Gomez, and DiJohnette was active for only six months, and until early 2016, the only known recording of the trio was "Bill Evans at the Montreux Jazz Festival," when a studio recording was unexpectedly revealed and made into "Some Other Some Other Time". A page of history was literally rewritten, and now, two days later, a new page of history is revealed: a recording of a concert in Hilversum, Holland, on June 22, 1968, recorded by the Netherlands Radio Union. This is from the Netherlands Radio Union, and the sound quality is as real as it gets! But above all, it is the trio's performance that intrigues me the most. After stepping on stage in Montreux and giving a powerful performance, the trio then went to the MPS studio. Whether the concentrated time in the studio changed something about the trio or whether they were in better shape that day will not be known until the full tour recordings are listened to, but there is a dynamism in the trio's improvisation "style" on this day that is clearly different from the one before, not to mention the beauty of Bill Evans. The "style" of the trio's improvisation on this day was clearly different from the previous one. Of course, in a once-in-a-lifetime live performance, there are different performances from those in studio recordings. However, the sound recorded here seems to be a change in the trio that transcends the difference between studio recordings and live performances.Jack DiJohnette's playing, in particular, is beautifully accompanied by the piano, with supple cymbal work, delicate brass playing that pushes the trio along, and powerful drumming that inspires the band. The climax of "Nardi s" shows that DiJohnette has gained more freedom within the band, and has taken the band to another level. Of course, the supreme Evans sound is superb! In addition to "Very Early," which was heard on "Some Other Time," ballads such as "Alfie," a Burt Bacharach classic, and "Emily" are also superb. Bill Evans' poetic performance of "Evans! The poetic performance by Bill Evans is nothing short of wonderful. (1/2)
