A 15-CD boxed set of historical opera recordings sung in German is now available, an extremely valuable collection of historical recordings for opera fans. Listening to these recordings, one realizes the astonishing fact that at one time, in all the opera houses of many German-speaking cities, everyone from Bizet to Verdi's well-known works were performed in German. Singers such as Fritz Wunderlich had to relearn their roles when performing on the world stage. It was Karajan who later broke this tradition. He performed each opera in its original language on the stages of Vienna, Salzburg, and Milan. This collection of German-sung operas in Highlites was produced entirely at major studios in the 1960s. The casts are also exceptional by today's standards. Even the minor roles are sung by some of the greatest singers of the era, and the art of the voice has reached a magnificent level.
