Arinde Quintet, Winners of the 2024 Munich ARD International Music Competition CD Debut with a Serious Program by Four Composers: Haas, Shostakovich, Vasks, Novák! The highly anticipated debut album from the Alinde Quintet, formed in 2019 and winner of the 2024 ARD International Music Competition in Munich, is now available. The Alinde Quintet, which also won the Czech Chamber Music Association Award in 2024, the same year as their Munich victory, has made its debut at major music festivals in the Czech Republic and abroad, including the Prague Spring International Music Festival. This ensemble is rapidly gaining international attention. Members honed their skills at Europe's leading music academies and gained experience with renowned youth orchestras like the Gustav Mahler Youth Orchestra and the EU Youth Orchestra. They also play pivotal roles in Prague's major orchestras—the Czech Philharmonic, the National Theatre Orchestra, the Prague Symphony Orchestra, the Prague Radio Symphony Orchestra, and the Prague Philharmonia. The program features works reflecting the inner worlds of four composers—Hass, Shostakovich, Vasks, and Novák—each possessing a strong individuality and steadfastly upholding their convictions and political stances.From dark reflections on fascism to a playful spirit brimming with joy, it shapes a dramatic narrative. Häser's Woodwind Quintet was composed when he was 30 years old, roughly the same age as the current ensemble members. This work masterfully combines youthful energy with profound expressiveness. Furthermore, it is a special piece, one he performed when winning the Munich International Competition, leaving a strong impression on audiences previously unfamiliar with Häser and creating an unforgettable experience. The final piece in Haas's work, Epilogue, flows seamlessly into Shostakovich's String Quartet No. 8, arranged for woodwind quintet. Shostakovich himself referred to this quartet as "something like my epilogue." The ensemble performs this rich, uninterrupted flow of music with such musicality that it feels entirely original, not an arrangement. This marks the world premiere studio recording of this arrangement. Vasks's "In Memory of a Friend" is music for a departed friend, a work that brings acceptance of sorrow, loneliness, and loss. It also conveys the pride of the Arinde Quintet, known for its commitment to contemporary music.The album concludes with Novák's Concertino. This work is deeply imbued with the carefree atmosphere of Novák's youth, before his exile. Within the album as a whole, it stands in stark contrast to the weighty, deeply shadowed worldview of the earlier pieces, bringing light and hope. It compels us to question the true value of each work, while also strongly conveying the ensemble's pride and direction.
