When it comes to Neeme Järvi on the Chandos label, collaborations with the Royal Scottish National Orchestra and the London Philharmonic have been the norm, but this time he leads the Gothenburg Symphony Orchestra—his base of operations in Northern Europe and an ensemble with which he shares deep ties, having served as its principal conductor until 2004—in a program of Beethoven and Brahms! Beethoven’s “Triple Concerto,” which sounds almost like a piano trio with orchestral accompaniment, and Brahms’s “Double Concerto,” composed some 80 years later in 1887, in which the orchestra seems to take on the piano part. Järvi’s interpretations of German music—including his “Complete Symphonies” by Brahms (CHAN9776) and Schoenberg’s orchestral arrangement of the “Piano Quartets” (CHAN8825)—and has earned immense acclaim, on par with or even surpassing his well-established reputation for Russian music. The other leading ensemble performing with Järvi and the Gothenburg Symphony Orchestra is Trio Poseidon, a Swedish ensemble that took its name from the Poseidon statue—a symbol of Gothenburg—and began performing in 2002. Its members are Swedish heavyweights: Sara Trobeck Hesselink, concertmaster of the Gothenburg Symphony Orchestra; Káres Gunnarsson, principal cellist of the same orchestra; and Per Lundberg, a professor at the Royal College of Music in Stockholm who is also an active soloist.
