Description:

<The latest reissue of Switner's Bruckner recordings from 1986 in two volumes. The last two recordings from 1987 and 1988, Nos. 1 and 4, are newly reissued from the master tapes recorded by the U-Matic in Japan for this release. The Bruckner symphonies recorded between 1986 and 1990, the last period of Otmar Switner's (1922/5/16-2010/1/8) career, were recorded by him after he retired from conducting in 1990. Unfortunately, only five symphonies remain. He originally intended to conduct a complete symphony cycle, but due to health problems he resigned as general director of the Staatskapelle Berlin in 1990, and was unable to conduct effectively. In his last years, Switner left behind for the Berliner Klassiks a series of large-scale performances of Bruckner and Brahms that seem to sum up his career. The Bruckner, in particular, had never been recorded in a session before, and at a time when Bruckner performances and recordings were increasing worldwide, it was a welcome source of information. However, since there are many recordings suitable for high sound quality among the digital recordings that were introduced after 1985, well after the other labels, we have introduced mastering by Mr. Christoph Stickel as with the analog recordings. Therefore, we introduced mastering by Mr. Christoph Stickel as well as analog recordings. The process of mastering by Mr. Stickel is not so different from that of analog recordings, even if it is a digital source, and he dares to convert the original "U-Matic tapes" (there are very few facilities in the world that can play them nowadays) to analog once, and then re-master them in the analog domain as before. The original master recording method was used. Although the recording method of the original master is different, the SACD format is more consistent than the mastering of the conventional analog master. Please check out the sound quality. Basically, Switner's interpretation of Bruckner is as simple as his interpretation of other Bruckner works, focusing on the music itself, and this performance of No. 1 may be said to be close to the original state of the music.Although it is often featured in recordings of the complete works, it is a piece that looks good on its own, and Neumann, who is not a Bruckner conductor, also recorded it for ETERNA, albeit at a very different recording time and interpretation (1965 recording with LGO, which was released on SACD in the same project on 0302921BC in 2022). (Recorded in 1965 with LGO and released on SACD in 2022 on 0302921BC under the same project). The music in No. 4, recorded a year later in 1988, is in keeping with the scale of the work, and is a true example of Switner's ability to let the music speak for itself. This is an important recording for those who understand Bruckner, even though there are many other competing recordings. (1/2)
