Despite his untimely death, Pergolesi (1710–1736) was a composer who created music of extraordinary excellence. In particular, the splendor of this “Stabat Mater” is something that can never be fully described, no matter how much one speaks of it. This album brings together three works by Pergolesi. With the crystalline voices of Krepper and Berst, the understated yet deeply lyrical ensemble of the Bamberg String Quartet, Edelman providing solid support on the lower strings, and Hops masterfully handling both the harpsichord and organ, this is a thoroughly satisfying performance despite the small ensemble.
