Description:
Enthusiastic performance by the Oregon Symphony Orchestra led by Kalmar. The whole picture of contemporary music by American composers! From Barber to Shepherd, the spirit of America is alive and well! SACD hybrid disc. This new recording by the Oregon Symphony Orchestra, conducted by Carlos Kalmar, focuses on five American composers in Aspects of America. All but Barber are currently leading American composers, and together with "The Soul of America" (PTC 5186481), the new recordings offer a glimpse of American music from the 20th to the 21st century. Sean Sheppard has been described as "the most exciting composer of the new generation" (The New York Times). The magic recorded here was co-commissioned by the BBC and Carnegie Hall, and was composed for a European tour by the National Youth Orchestra of America, conducted by Gergiev. As the title suggests, the work is "magical," incorporating elements from the works of Russian composers such as Tchaikovsky, Mussorgsky, Rimsky-Korsakov, Glinka, Shostakovich, and Stravinsky.Sebastian Currier is a composer born in Pennsylvania in 1959, and the microsymphs recorded here are interesting for their complex interplay with percussion instruments, including piano, and strings. Christopher Rouse is the recipient of the Pulitzer Prize, the most prestigious award in the United States given for news reporting, literature, and composition. The slow and plodding Supplication is closely related to Lausz's Symphony No. 4, composed in 2013, which is a work of beauty for strings. The fable "Comment on a Group of Blind Elephants" originated in India, in which several blind men discuss their impressions of an elephant by touching only parts of it. In the West, it was made famous by the 19th century American poet John Godfrey Sachs' 1872 poem of the same name. Kenji Bunch's "Aspects of an Elephant," commissioned by the Oregon Symphony Orchestra, was inspired by this fable. It consists of an introduction, six variations, a disputation, and a finale. The majestic sound is extremely pleasing to the ear. Barber's Souvenir is a six-piece work originally composed as a piano suite.Born in 1958 in Uruguay, Kalmar succeeded the late James DePriest (1936-2013) as Music Director of the Oregon Symphony Orchestra in 2003, and has grown the ensemble with an ambitious repertoire. He has been a member of the Oregon Symphony Orchestra since 2003, and has grown the ensemble's ambitious repertoire, Vaughan Williams, Britten)" (PTC 5186471) and "Haydn: Symphonies Nos. 53, 64 and 96" (PTC 5186612). Together with his handpieces, he has released interesting albums with clear themes. King International
