Description:

Contemporary Russian SACD Hybrid Edition by Haimovitz with music that asks the question. Haimovitz's new album is a collection of cello works from the former Soviet Union and Russia, but he is not a one-trick pony. The album title "Troika" refers to a Russian three-horse carriage, here Rachmaninoff, Shostakovich, and Prokofiev. The album is a musical journey through imperial Russia, the Soviet Union, and present-day Russia. The main focus is on the sonatas of these three musicians, and Haimovitz gives a magnificent and dry performance. In each case, the piano part has a difficulty and presence beyond the accompaniment, but O'Reilly shows his virtuosity to great effect. The two pieces are accompanied by small pieces by the same composer, both of which are meaningful. Shostakovich's "Waltz No. 2," part of his "Suite for Stage Orchestra," shows a Jewish sensibility. Haimovitz rather states that he chose it because of its effective use in Kubrick's posthumous film "Eyes Wide Shut" on the issue of sexuality.Prokofiev's "Troika" is one of the songs from Feinzimmer's film "Lieutenant Kyger". It suggests the stupidity and carelessness of the government in making Kyger a hero based on people's rumors, even though he never existed, and demonstrates the meaninglessness of words with Rachmaninoff's "Vocalise". Haimovitz, who has made a splash with his cello playing rock music by Jimmy Hendrix, Led Zeppelin, and others, again performs something exciting related to Russia. Victor Tsoy (1962-1990), leader of the rock band "Quinault," which was extremely popular among young people at the end of the former Soviet Union, was scheduled to visit Japan in the early 1990s but died suddenly in an automobile accident. Although Tsai was of Korean Soviet descent, he was a guru of sorts, having released many songs that questioned the hardships of life at the end of communism and the policies of the Soviet Union, such as the departure from the war in Afghanistan. His masterpiece "Kukushka (Kakko)" appeared in the classical world. Twenty years after Tsoi, a controversial feminist punk rock band, Pussy Riot, emerged in Russia, which is no longer a communist country.Consisting of about 10 young Russian women, the group's members were arrested in 2012 for singing "Virgin Mary, Please Get Putin Out of My Life" at the Cathedral of Our Lady of the Savior Haristos. The group made news when musicians from around the world demanded their release. Haimovitz also has a message, but it is symbolic that the Cathedral of Our Savior Haristos was destroyed by Stalin and rebuilt by Rostropovich, who was the main architect. And "Back to U.S.S.R." by the Beatles. Haimovitz's performance tells us where the troika is headed. King International
