Description:
Rossini’s “Cenerentola,” Directed by Abbado’s Son: A DVD Featuring Young Singers on Stage in Bari, Southern Italy! A wonderful new DVD has been released featuring Rossini’s masterpiece opera buffa, “Cenerentola.” Daniele Abbado, son of the renowned conductor Claudio Abbado, is a stage director who has been garnering significant attention in recent years. His 2008 production of Rossini’s *Ermione* at the Rossini Opera Festival in Pesaro generated a great deal of buzz and has already been released on DVD by DYNAMIC (with subtitles: KKC9006; direct import: DYNDVD33609) . This DVD features the production directed by Daniele Abbado at the Petruzzelli Theater in Bari in April 2010. “Cenerentola” is based on the Cinderella story, but since it features a strong element of magic, the staging is often modernized. In this production as well, a modular kitchen is placed at the center, creating a 1970s-style atmosphere. The role of Cenerentola—or Angelina—is sung by José María Lo Monaco, a mezzo-soprano from the Catania region of Spain. She is a petite and beautiful mezzo. She sang the role of Smeton in *Anna Bolena* during the Bergamo Donizetti Theater’s Japan tour in January 2007, earning acclaim from discerning opera fans. The role of Prince Don Ramiro is played by Maxim Mironov, a Rossini tenor from Russia. This role is one of his specialties, having already earned acclaim for it at the Glyndebourne Festival. Nicola Olivieri, who also participated in the Turin Opera’s Japan tour in July 2010, had sung the role of Alidoro at the 2000 Rossini Opera Festival. Up-and-coming basso buffo Paolo Bordogna will also sing Don Magnifico at the Rossini Opera Festival in August of the same year. And Roberto De Candia, who has sung Dandini twice in Japan to great acclaim, will once again showcase his signature role here. Another highlight is the conducting by the masterful Everino Pido. While he is a renowned conductor known to all fans of Rossini and Donizetti, recordings of his performances are extremely rare, making this a precious opportunity to hear his vibrant musical interpretation.
