The intensity of Barbirolli's passion in performance is not always apparent in his official recordings, but the explosive power of this performance is tremendous. The Berlin Philharmonie's functionality as an orchestra is what makes this performance a masterpiece. Barbirolli and the BPO are famous for the episode of "the decisive performance of Mahler's 9th, which was officially recorded in 1964," but their relationship was long-lasting. Barbirolli was a typical "mature conductor", and his fame in his later years was enormous. The music he created is rich and humane, as if influenced by the fact that he was a cello virtuoso himself.
