Aho’s Theremin Concerto: Inviting the Listener into an Unreal Season SACD hybrid disc. Kalevi Aho is a prolific composer. He has made it his life’s work to compose concertos for every instrument in the orchestra, with his 18th work being the 2011 Horn Concerto. After attending a concert by the Raahe City Orchestra—which celebrated its 100th anniversary in April 2009—Aho was deeply impressed by the performance of the orchestra’s horn player, Anne Salminen. Aho then offered to compose a horn concerto for her; he wrote the piece from May through June 2011, and it premiered in January 2012. Rather than standing beside the conductor, the soloist begins offstage, then moves from left to right behind the orchestra before emerging at the front of the stage. The movement of the soundscape is also effective. Aho composed the Theremin Concerto in the fall of 2011 after being asked by Carolina Eick, who had performed the Theremin in Leila Auerbach’s Symphony No. 1—which Aho had heard premiered in Washington in February 2010—and while learning about the instrument’s functions and effects from her. The theme is not the four seasons, but the eight seasons. The Theremin’s otherworldly sound expresses a sense of winter or seasons unique to the Nordic region, as captured in the movements titled “Autumn,” “Colors of Autumn,” “Black Snow,” “Christmas in the Dark,” “Winter Frost,” “Snowdrifts,” “Thaw,” and “Midnight Sun.” Carolina Aik’s magical performance is truly mesmerizing.
