This release commemorating the 100th anniversary of Benjamin Britten’s (1913–1976) birth features a collaboration with three outstanding soloists: Jasper de Waart, principal horn of the Royal Concertgebouw Orchestra (RCO); James Gilchrist—a British tenor who made the transition from a medical career—and Canadian soprano Barbara Hannigan, who specializes in modern and contemporary works! ■The masterpieces “Serenade” and “The Crimson Petals Fall Asleep,” composed for the legendary hornist Dennis Brain and his close friend Peter Pears. The collaboration between the leading Dutch hornist, who heads the RCO’s horn section, and the world-renowned tenor—a specialist in British art songs—is a pairing truly worthy of commemorating the 100th anniversary of the composer’s birth.
