Choral works by Walter Ehren, who was active in exile in the United States! Walter Ehren was an Austrian-born Jewish composer who fled Nazi persecution and fled to the United States in 1939. After studying composition with Leo Sowerby and Roy Harris, he enrolled in graduate composition classes at the University of California, Los Angeles, where he befriended other Austrian and German exiles. Later, while working as a music critic for the Los Angeles Times, he established a music department at Loyola Marymount University, where he befriended composers such as Stravinsky, Milhaud, Villa-Lobos, and Chavez. While working as a critic, he took a break from composing, but resumed composing after retiring as a journalist in the 1980s. Most of Ahlen's works, primarily for voice and piano, express his feelings about his experiences during the Holocaust, including his escape from Austria, the deaths of family members in concentration camps, and the suicide of several family members, and he gained recognition as a composer in his later years when his works were performed publicly for the first time in 2008. The work was first performed publicly in 2008, and he gained recognition as a composer in his later years.The Song of Songs, originally composed in 1953 for 112 instruments and later reconstructed for 38 instruments by Eskender Bekmambetov under the supervision of Arlen, and The Poet in Exile, composed based on five poems by Czeslaw Miłosz and added by conductor Kenneth Woods, are coupled on this album.
