“Turiya Sings,” a long-lost recording by Alice Coltrane—who performed with John Coltrane’s band and is known as the godmother of spiritual jazz—is being released to commemorate the 60th anniversary of Impulse!, the label that has brought so many of her works to the world! Alice had been exploring various religions and spiritual music alongside John Coltrane since the 1960s, but the loss of her husband in 1967 deepened her quest for the “spiritual,” leading her to begin producing her own albums featuring the harp and organ—a project John Coltrane had encouraged during his lifetime. She released many spiritual jazz masterpieces on Impulse! Records, including “Journey in Suchdhananda” and “Puta the L’Dode.” However, in 1978, she began a lifestyle rooted in Eastern thought (particularly Indian philosophy) and became a spiritual teacher herself, which led her to withdraw from commercial musical activities such as recording and concerts. In 1981, she began composing music for use in ashrams and worship services, and the following year, she produced cassette tapes to distribute to her students. This work is now being officially released for the first time on CD, LP, and digitally. Kirtan refers to the practice of conveying prayers to God through music—what is often called “singing yoga”—and on this album, you can hear her vocals alongside skillfully played organ, synthesizer, and strings. It is said that when it was distributed among friends on cassette in 1982, approximately 500 copies were produced.
