Born in Harlem, New York, in 1930, Sonny Rollins began his career playing the alto saxophone before switching to the tenor saxophone at age 16. Throughout the early 1950s, he recorded with Miles Davis, and Thelonious Monk, before reaching his golden age through his participation in the Clifford Brown–Max Roach Quintet and the release of his 1956 album *The Art of Sonny Rollins: Saxophone Colossus*, which became a historic masterpiece. He continued his prolific career thereafter, contributing saxophone solos to studio recordings by The Rolling Stones and winning two Grammy Awards, before passing away in May 2026 at the age of 95. A live album capturing the performances of Sonny Rollins—one of the most important and influential saxophonists in the jazz world—during his tour of Japan is now available!
Rollins, who described himself as “deeply devoted to Eastern religions,” announced his second extended hiatus in the late 1960s, returning with *Next Album* in 1972. During his hiatus, he studied Indian and Japanese philosophy, which ultimately deepened his musical development. In 1983, he participated in “Live Under the Sky” with a quartet featuring an all-star lineup: Pat Metheny, Alfonso Johnson, and Jack DeJohnette. The performance was recorded for TV and radio broadcast. This album is a live recording of that broadcast.
The set list included Rollins’ original composition “Jack in the Box” and “Moritat” from his masterpiece *Saxophone Colossus*. This archival release is sure to become a cherished addition to any fan’s collection.
