A rare collection of arias made possible by the strong bond between the two artists. Also includes excerpts from *Carmen*! All recordings in stereo. F. Dieskau made his opera debut in *Don Carlo* at the Berlin City Opera in November 1948 (at the age of 23). It was Fritschai himself who discovered him at that audition, and the two would go on to perform together numerous times until Fritschai’s retirement from conducting. Although this was not part of F. Dieskau’s main repertoire, was this recording perhaps a result of their meeting? In December of the year this recording was made, Fritschay’s health deteriorated, and he was forced to give up conducting. As a recording of their collaboration made just a few months prior, along with the surviving album cover, this is indeed a precious release. The coupling, *Carmen*, seems to have held special significance for Fritschay. It was *Carmen* that marked his debut performance as a guest conductor at the Vienna State Opera in December 1946—prior to *The Death of Danton*. This January 1958 recording of excerpts from *Carmen* in German serves not only as a record made immediately before the onset of his illness but also as a turning point in his career, as he resigned as music director of the Bavarian State Opera in November of that year—meaning he left behind only two recordings for DG: this one and *Fidelio*. Although he had previously recorded a suite from *Carmen*, the vibrant, life-affirming expression heard here gives not the slightest hint of the various crises that would soon beset Fritschay. Incidentally, the chorus is conducted by a young Kurt Eichhorn.
