The Catalan composer Casablancas (b. 1956) thoroughly explores the sensuality of sound. This characteristic is strikingly evident in his masterpiece, “Seven Scenes from Hamlet,” where every note that makes up the composition is imbued with life, and the characters and setting are layered with a profusion of sounds. The opening of the first scene features the celesta, creating an ethereal atmosphere. Furthermore, the timid sound of the strings seems to represent the fragility of life, as if treading on thin ice. Hamlet’s most famous soliloquy is woven into complex counterpoint. And Ophelia, a symbol of innocence, is portrayed through a melody imbued with gentle lyricism. With a faint hint of Schoenberg’s influence, the conclusion of this hopelessly tragic story is marked by enigmatic sounds and profound silence. Naxos Japan
