A collection of piano pieces by 20th century English composer Herbert Howells. Herbert Howells' first musical education was as a child playing the upright piano at home with his sister. He studied with Herbert Bulwer, organist at Gloucester Cathedral, and formed a lifelong friendship with Ivor Gurney, with whom he shared a desk. Howells would later make a name for himself as a composer of religious music, and this album contains eight of his works, from "Summer Pastorals," an early work written before his studies at the Royal College of Music, to the Debussy-like "Fantasie" and the "Petrus Suite," which is based on the mature style of his later years. Pianist Schellhorn, who was born in Yorkshire in 1977, will share his fascination with the works. Naxos Japan
