Description:
Danish composer Paul Ruzas is known for his diverse compositional style, which combines contrasting elements. This album features new concertos written for three historic instruments—the recorder, the positive organ, and the harpsichord—and explores the contemporary potential of period instruments. “Transfigurations” is a concerto performed by alternating between various recorders, ranging from sopranino to tenor, with the solo part performed by Mikala Petri, the virtuoso who elevated the recorder to the status of a full-fledged concert instrument. The following piece, “Movable Concerto,” is a short work for positive organ and strings, featuring vivid shifts in expression ranging from Baroque-style ostinatos to contemporary sounds. The solo part is performed by the renowned Nordic virtuoso Peter Navarro-Alonso. In these two pieces, the Kremerata Baltica—known for its precise ensemble playing—faithfully recreates every detail of the score. The “Harpsichord Concerto,” included as the final track, has already been recognized as an essential part of the instrument’s contemporary repertoire thanks to Mahan Esfahani’s performance. Another highlight is the accompaniment provided by the Aarhus Symphony Orchestra, led by Segerstam, who passed away in 2024. Naxos Japan
