Titled *Findesiecle* (The End of the Century), this album is a collection of works that transpose solo songs written from the late 19th to the early 20th century into unaccompanied choral pieces. Gottwald, who arranged the piece, drew inspiration from Ligeti’s choral techniques and subdivided the solo voice and piano arrangement into 6 to 16 a cappella parts. A major feature of this work is how it beautifully blends the melodies and harmonies of the original pieces by Richard Strauss, the Mahler couple, Wolf, Schreker, and others into a single, unified sound woven solely from voices, while preserving their inherent beauty. Led by Markus Creed, who served as chief conductor from 2004 to 2020, the SWR (Southwest German Broadcasting) Vocal Ensemble, led by Marcus Creed—who served as chief conductor from 2004 to 2020—features a select group of about 20 elite singers. Through their exceptional precision and crystal-clear vocal delivery, they bring to life a world of expression distinct from that of solo art songs, rendered through complex and delicately interwoven textures.
