Description:
A masterpiece of the late classical period that anticipated Bellini and Gounod, finally on film! In January 1796, just before the Habsburg Duchy of Milan fell to the French army led by Napoleon, Zingarelli's "Giulietta and Romeo" was performed for the first time at La Scala. The role of Romeo was sung by a male treble singer, and even after the famous castrato Crescentini gave the first performance, it remained popular for a long time, with female singers such as Malibran singing the role as a natural. The composer Zingarelli, born in 1752, was a contemporary of Mozart and Salieri, and his deeply sophisticated music, based on his understanding of 18th century operatic language, made him an important composer in the period before Rossini's arrival in Italy (Napoleon, the emperor of Italy, liked this work and invited Zingarelli to Paris). Napoleon also liked the work and invited Zingarelli to Paris). ) In 2021, the Royal Opera House Orchestra of Versailles released a CD of excerpts from this work with Chalve and Fagioli in the title roles, and now the orchestra has released a video of the complete performance with the same two leading roles plus four talented singers. The costumes are by Christian Lacroix, a master of haute couture who has been active in opera and classical theater in recent years, and the stage design is an accurate reflection of the fashion of the late 18th century, enhancing the charm of the stylish old instrumental music.
