The young Finnish composer Toivo Kula lost his life at the age of 34 after an altercation at a drinking party. He studied composition under Sibelius while studying in Paris. In 1907, at the age of 24, he published his Violin Sonata, which attracted much attention, followed by a number of songs and piano pieces. His untimely death was an immeasurable loss to the Finnish music world, as he had shown great promise for the future. The first collection of Kula's complete songs for solo voice contains 27 songs, including "12 Folk Songs of Southern Ostrobania," which has a cheerful and simple flavor, and other songs using folk material, as well as "Ut min vag i varlden gar," a work written when he was 16 years old. His songs are written in the Finnish language with its unique intonation and accent, and soprano Jenni Lattila, who studied at the Sibelius Academy, makes the most of the beauty of the words and sings them all with great expressive power.
