Description:

Modern Czech composer Bohuslav Martineau with two of Martineau's minor operas under the baton of Cornelius Meister. Known as a prolific composer, he left behind 400 works, including six symphonies and 11 concertos. He left behind 400 works, including 6 symphonies and 11 concertos, including more than 11 operas. He was known to change his style from one work to the next, and the two operas on this album, although not so far apart in date of composition, give very different impressions. The Tears of the Knife" was so obscene and immoral that it was never performed during Martineau's lifetime, and it was not until October 22, 1969, after his death, that the first performance was finally given. Although the story follows the dialogue between the three main characters, Eleonore, her mother, and the devil, the music is fragmentary and sometimes jazz-like, reminiscent of Hans Eisler's works. On the other hand, "Comedy on the Bridge," a charming radio opera based on a libretto by Czech playwright V.K. Kritzpera, was quickly forgotten after its broadcast premiere. Martineau later composed a suite based on the music of this work, which is still performed occasionally today. The Stuttgart State Orchestra, conducted by Kornelius Meister, provides excellent support for the singers, including Elena Tsaragova, a soprano who has been in the spotlight in recent years.
