Olivier Fortin, a rising star, and a group of master musicians reveal the orchestral suites as they were originally conceived Ensemble Mask brings together Canadian harpsichordist Olivier Fortin and other master musicians active in renowned early music ensembles around the world. Having gained recognition in Japan through their recent tours here, they are renowned for performances that reveal the true nature of the works by leveraging their exceptional technical skill, musicality, and the intimate communication fostered by their small ensemble size. Here, too, they have recorded Bach’s masterpieces—the Orchestral Suites—with a single performer per part; but they go a step further by recreating the original instrumentation—centered on strings and the oboe—which is considered the prototype of the forms we know today. Particularly distinctive is Suite No. 2, which typically features a flute solo; here, the key has been lowered by a whole step to A minor, and the oboe takes on the solo part. The “Badinerie,” a staple of the flute repertoire, is, of course, also performed on the oboe. Furthermore, the brilliant Suite No. 3—which normally features trumpets and timpani—is performed here with strings alone, while Suite No. 4 includes three oboes. While it is certainly interesting that these are likely the forms Bach originally envisioned, this album is primarily captivating for the opportunity it offers to experience a sound that is completely different from the standard interpretation.
