Hans Gall was born in Austria, studied musicology at the University of Vienna, and taught at the Vienna Academy of Music and the University of Vienna. Just as he was beginning to establish his reputation, he was forced to leave Vienna because of his Jewish descent and emigrated to England, where he remained as a teacher and conductor until his death at the age of 97. As a composer, Gull followed in the footsteps of Brahms, whom he admired throughout his life, and continued to write neat, classical works that did not use modern forms such as chromatic scales. This performance at the Osnabrück Opera is the first revival in 84 years of Gull's "Night Song," a dramatic ballad set in 12th-century Palermo that depicts the emotional turmoil of a Sicilian princess. The music is full of romanticism and beauty reminiscent of Richard Strauss. Naxos Japan
