Kent majored in Comparative Literature at Sarah Lawrence College in New York. After graduating, driven by her passion for music, she traveled to Europe to further her studies. Through a series of fortuitous events, she arrived in London and enrolled in the postgraduate music program at the Guildhall School of Music and Drama. There, she met Jim Tomlinson, who would later become her husband and musical partner. Her musical journey began with piano lessons in her childhood. With a keen ear and a sincere voice, she sought opportunities to express her love for music. Yet nothing foreshadowed her transition from an academic path to one that would earn her international acclaim as a leading jazz singer of her generation. She has released 13 studio albums to date, including *Breakfast on the Morning Tram* (Blue Note/EMI, 2007), which went platinum and was nominated for a Grammy Award. Furthermore, through numerous collaborations, she has performed on stages in approximately 60 countries throughout her career. The reason fans around the world support her lies in her ability to transcend borders and genres, expressing the emotional core of a song with delicate nuance. Her unique multilingual repertoire includes standards, chansons, bossa nova, and original compositions created by her husband—saxophonist, producer, composer, and arranger Jim Tomlinson—in collaboration with Nobel Prize-winning author Kazuo Ishiguro. They have been collaborating since 2006. She has also performed with Brazilian masters Marcos Valle, Roberto Menescal, and Danilo Caími, as well as the renowned French string quartet, the Ébène Quartet.
