Description:
West Coast girl pop treasures backed by David Axelrod, H.B. Barnum and the Wrecking Crew! Dick Clark also produced and partially narrated "Where the Action Is" (weekday afternoons in the US), a spin-off of "American Bandstand" from 1966-67. It was hosted by two singers, Linda Scott and Steve Alaimo, and had other regular members. One of them was Tina Mason. Raised in Southern California, Tina often sang with her music-loving parents from a young age, and in her mid-teens, she gained attention and became a big band vocalist, even winning a contest at the Hollywood Bowl. Eventually, she began performing in the house band at Disneyland. The band was originally called Kay Bell & the Spacemen, but eventually changed to Tina & the Mustangs. David Axelrod, a young producer at Capitol Records, heard them play and scouted them out, leading to their record debut. As a bonus track, this issue includes two songs from the front and back sides of the single released under the name Tina & the Mustangs on Capitol Records in 1966. The album "Is Something Wonderful!" was also released by Capitol Records in 1967.The producer was still David Axelrod. He boasted a wide range of musical taste, including rock, jazz, and R&B. He is largely to blame for the album's diverse musicality, which ranges from classic pop songs that make use of Tina's sweet voice, to songs that express a jazz-derived sassiness, and to northern soul songs that make use of beats. Of course, Tina's ability to express herself in a way that matches the tone of the songs is a major factor in the album's success. The arranger was H.B. Burnham, who has worked with Axelrod many times. And the musicians are excellent." The core of the group is made up of members of the Los Angeles-based Wrecking Crew, including Earl Palmer, creator of "Backbeat." The jazz pianist Gerald Wiggins, who has worked extensively with Helen Humes and was Marilyn Monroe's vocal trainer, plays piano and organ. Bonus tracks include four additional singles not included on the album. Commentary: Hitoshi Kamishiro
