Description:
This album by the Silesian String Quartet is the first of the "Complete Chamber Works" (7CD) planned to commemorate the 100th anniversary of Weinberg's birth in 2019. Weinberg was born in Warsaw, but defected to the Soviet Union at the outbreak of World War II, where he made the acquaintance of Shostakovich and determined to pursue a career as a composer. It was during this time that he wrote the Piano Quintet, Op. 18, which led to Weinberg's wide acclaim, although it clearly shows the influence of Shostakovich's Piano Quintet, which had been composed four years earlier. In comparison, the String Quartet No. 7, written at the age of 38, uses Jewish melodies and has a lyrical style that shows Weinberg's originality, breaking away from Shostakovich's influence.
