These works—a fusion of poetry crafted by Japan’s leading wordsmiths, such as Shuntarō Tanikawa, Ichirō Araki, and Shūhei Akiyama, and Takemitsu’s uniquely delicate and profound musical world—transcend genres, from classical to pop to jazz, and continue to be sung by many artists to this day. This groundbreaking album features Yuma Kumaki, an up-and-coming soprano who burst onto the scene like a comet, alongside Kazuki Yamada—one of Japan’s leading conductors, whose heart was deeply moved by her voice—who provides piano accompaniment for the entire album. While this is the first full album of Takemitsu Songs performed by a classical soprano, it is precisely because of the extremely minimalist arrangement—just voice and piano—that the breath of the words, the nuances of the melodies, and even the silences are vividly brought to life.
