For Zinman, Schubert has been a composer he has loved dearly ever since his days as a violinist. The “Sonatina for Violin and Piano” was the piece Zinman performed at his very first solo recital, and the “Unfinished” Symphony was the very first orchestral score he ever bought—making this recording project the realization of a long-awaited dream for Zinman. This album features the “Unfinished” Symphony (No. 7), one of the most popular works in the classical repertoire. It is paired with three exquisite pieces Schubert wrote for violin and orchestra. With Zinman’s mastery of period performance practice and the meticulous sound craftsmanship unique to the Zurich Tonhalle, this recording highlights both the “Unfinished” Symphony—which offers a glimpse into the depths of Romanticism—and the charm of this collection of delicate early Romantic violin works.
