The Leisure Society

Description:

The Leisure Society is a UK chamber-pop band that made its breakthrough with an unprecedented nomination for best song two years in a row at the Ivar Novello, a prestigious music awards organized by the British Society of Composers. It has been exactly 10 years since their debut album "The Sleeper" and the classic song "The Last Of Melting Snow" triggered their breakthrough. The new album, their fifth in total, is released on the band's newly launched independent label, Ego Drain Records. It has been four years since their last album, "The Art Of Hanging On". The process of completing this album was not an easy one. Shortly after the release of the last album, Nick Hemming, the band's songwriter and frontman, and Helen Whitaker, the band's flutist, separated, resulting in Nick moving from Brighton, where he had lived for many years. Over the next 18 months, the demos of songs written while moving from one place to another and coming to terms with the serious separation formed the foundation of this two-disc opus, Arrivals & Departures.Recorded in various locations including the Peak District in the UK, the Cotswolds, and Richelieu's apartment in France, as well as London's Union Chapel and Conch Studios, the famed studio founded by the Kinks, the album originally deals with the theme of separation. While originally dealing with the theme of separation, it is also a lyrically intelligent, well-regarded exploration of a dramatically shifting world of divisions, boundaries, and lost hope (presumably in reference to Brexit). The Leisure Society's excellent songwriting and artisanally precise production and arrangement boast a stability that is unique to The Leisure Society, even on this album, which does not hide the chaos of the music. The Leisure Society's music has been recognized and praised by Brian Eno since their debut album, and Emma Gatril and others have also participated. The 16 songs on this two-disc set are at once personal and universal, like a road movie or a diary.
