Experience Unlimited, the band that laid the foundation for the Washington, D.C. go-go scene, officially reissues their 1977 debut album "Free Yourself" on STRUT! A crossover funk masterpiece! Experience Unlimited, the funk band that laid the foundation of the Washington D.C. go-go scene with Trouble Funk, has officially reissued their 1977 debut album "Free Yourself" on STRUT! Experience Unlimited wrote the hit song "Da Butt" in 1988, which was featured in Spike Lee's film "School Days" and was unmistakable in Grace Jones' "Slave To The Rhythm" and Kurtis Blow's "Party Time"! Known for adding rolling rhythms, Experience Unlimited began in 1973 when they met at a Southeast D.C. high school, won the school talent contest, and caught the attention of Jimmy Gray of Black Fire Records. Jimmy saw great potential in us and put us in the studio," recalls bandleader Gregory "Sugar Bear" Elliott. That was our first recording experience. I remember he told us to just be ourselves and we got together and played.Back then we were just kids and said what we felt." Free Yourself is a free-flowing album, full of positive messages and infectious grooves. It can be played in any style," Gregory continues. The album is full of different songs and emotions. From "Peace Gone Away" to the heavy guitar work of "Funky Consciousness" to the early Gogol style of "Free Yourself," it all comes together. We wanted to record where we were." Original artwork, including cover painting by Malik Edwards. The songs have been remastered by The Carberry and include a recent interview with band leader and co-founder Gregory "Sugar Bear" Elliott and rare photos.
