C.P.E. Bach’s Hamburg Symphony: Whimsical and Brimming with Ideas Performed by the Stuttgart Chamber Orchestra Conducted by Wolfram Christ, former principal violist of the BPO! To commemorate the 300th anniversary of C.P.E. Bach’s birth in 2014, the Hensler label is releasing a series of new recordings; this album features the Stuttgart Chamber Orchestra performing the six symphonies known as the “Hamburg Symphonies.” These six sinfonias were written for string orchestra and are works that exhibit a rather chamber-music-like cohesion. They were commissioned in 1773 by Baron Gottfried van Swieten, who was staying in Berlin as the Austrian ambassador, after Bach had moved from Berlin to Hamburg in 1768. Since he was asked to “compose without regard to any technical difficulties in performance,” the musical ideas are bold and unconventional for their time. These six movements are collectively known as the “Hamburg Symphonies,” a collection that embodies C.P.E. Bach’s characteristic style—whimsical and brimming with creative ideas. The Stuttgart Chamber Orchestra was founded in 1945 by Karl Münchinger. With the goal of performing Baroque music, the ensemble has since expanded its repertoire while still specializing primarily in Baroque works. This recording is conducted by Wolfram Christ, who formerly served as a violist with the Berlin Philharmonic. Christ has served as the orchestra’s principal guest conductor since 2009 and has continued to perform actively ever since.
