Description:

Arvo Pärt’s latest work—a world premiere recording!! This 10th ECM release commemorates Pärt’s 70th birthday. Pärt and ECM have maintained a long collaboration spanning 20 years. This recording features the latest work by Pärt, who turned 70 on September 11, 2005, and continues to lead the contemporary music scene. *Ramentate* is a work inspired by “Marsyas,” a massive sculpture created by Mumbai-born artist Anish Kapoor and installed in Turbine Hall at Tate Modern, one of the world’s premier contemporary art museums. It was composed for solo piano and full orchestra. (A photograph is included in the booklet.) “We do not live to prepare for death.” This was the strong feeling Pärt had while standing before this sculpture. Therefore, “Lamentate” is not an elegy for death. It is an elegy dedicated to all “life” struggling and suffering in this world filled with pain and despair. Also included is “Da Pacem Domine,” a prayer for peace rendered with unparalleled beauty by the Hilliard Ensemble.
