Recorded in 1964, this album captures a transitional lineup of the Jazz Messengers led by drummer Art Blakey and was released the following year on the Limelight label.
At the time, Blakely was navigating the departure of several key members while searching for a new lineup, resulting in one of the band’s characteristically short-lived lineups in its long history. This six-piece lineup featured Lee Morgan on trumpet, Curtis Fuller on trombone, John Gilmore on tenor saxophone, John Hicks on piano, and Victor Sprouls on bass. They deliver a powerful performance that reflects both the intensity of Blakey’s established hard bop style and the personnel changes within the Messengers during the mid-1960s. Blakey’s drumming, with its electrifying rhythmic command that symbolizes his decades-long leadership, served as the foundation throughout the entire session.
