Tchaikovsky's Piano Trio maintains a dark, sorrowful atmosphere from beginning to end, and for good reason: it was written in memory of the composer's friend Nikolai Rubinstein, the Russian pianist, composer and conductor. Hence its title, "In Memory of a Great Artist". The first movement is intensely romantic, whereas the second is classical in cast - a difference often attributed to Rubinstein's own classicist leanings. Dvorak's Piano Trio No. 3 dates from 1883 and was premiered in the Bohemian town of Mlada Boleslav. It comes from a period in which the composer was beset by conflicting pressures: Hanslick's invitation to move to Vienna, his sense of duty towards the Czech nationalist school, his ambition to be an international opera composer, and the deaths of two of his children. The result is a work of comparatively raw, turbulent expression. Rather than treating this nationalist music as an evocation of a particular region, Renaud Capucon and his colleagues approach it as a boldly original work in which one senses the composer taking his next step forward. To that end Capucon has enlisted two young artists from among the musicians he knows best. First, the young cellist Kian Soltani, who made his solo debut on DG in 2018. At just 26 he was already regarded as one of the most promising cellists of his generation; supported by Anne-Sophie Mutter and Daniel Barenboim, he is a member of Mutter's Virtuosi, the West-Eastern Divan Orchestra and the newly founded Boulez Ensemble. Lahav Shani, also active as a conductor, was born in 1989. He studied piano and double bass in Israel, made his debut with the Israel Philharmonic as a pianist in 2007, joined the orchestra as a double bass player in 2010, and made his conducting debut in 2013. A pupil of Barenboim, he has conducted subscription concerts and opera performances with the Staatskapelle Berlin, won acclaim conducting the Yomiuri Nippon Symphony Orchestra in April 2016, and is currently principal guest conductor of the Vienna Symphony. Recorded live at the Aix-en-Provence Festival, these are superb performances that carry all the tension only a live occasion can bring. Warner Music Japan
