Zelenka (1679-1745)

Description:

Zelenka's celebratory opera, "St. Wenceslas' Melodrama" in its entirety, gorgeous festive music by the Czech elite! Zelenka (1679-1745) was a Bohemian composer who studied with Fuchs in Vienna and made his mark at the court of Dresden. The "Melodrama of St. Wenceslas" recorded in this issue is a music drama performed at the festivities held in Prague in 1723 to celebrate the coronation of Emperor Karl VI of Austria. It is no exaggeration to say that at that time, national festivals were the scene of political maneuvering. Just as Lully wrote many operas extolling the authority of the Sun King, so too did Zelenka create a lavish production to showcase the power of Augustus the Strong, who brought unprecedented prosperity to Dresden. This album is an excellent introduction to Zelenka's music, as it is from a period when he was beginning to shine at the court. The arias, with their glittering brass fanfares and elegant ornamentation, bring to mind the splendor of the festivities of the time. More than 150 musicians gave grand performances at the festival, and this album also features performances by representative groups not only from the Czech Republic but also from all over Europe. The arias by soloists active in the Czech Republic are also worth listening to. The Czech Boys Choir Boni Pueri is a world-class choir that has given many performances in Japan. This album also includes PDF data of the libretto distributed at the time of the performance in 1723. It is said that more than 4,000 copies of the libretto were sold at the time, and this rare recording allows you to fully enjoy the atmosphere of the gorgeous and gorgeous festival that the aristocrats were so excited about.
