The new recording by the consort Sirius Viols, led by the virtuoso Hille Pearl, also known as the "Priestess of Viola da Gaba," is a remarkable recording of the 17th century English composer Simpson's "Four Seasons." The actual date of Christopher Simpson's (1605?-1669?) birth is unclear; he was born between 1602 and 1606 in Egton, Yorkshire, England, and the date of his death is also unclear. However, he was an English musician and composer, particularly associated with the viol, and all of his surviving works seem to have been viol consort or solo pieces for viol. After the siege of the city of York, he was sheltered by Sir Robert Boles, Lord of Skempton, Lincolnshire, and became a musician attached to Boles' estate. Lord Bolls reportedly hired him as a music teacher for his son. His famous book, The DivisionViolist, has remained in print for 60 years and is one of the sources of modern orthodoxy in old-time music performance.However, few of his works are extant, and this piece, which has been handed down in draft form, is one of the few. This collection of fantasias is composed for two voices each of treble viol and bass viol, as well as for basso continuo instruments. Each of the "Seasons" is written in a three-movement form of fancy, aire, and galliarde, and is not really a title piece that conjures up the four seasons.
