In 1940, he moved to the U.S. to avoid the rising Nazi regime, and from there he became an internationally active conductor. Horenstein was active in the Mahler and Bruckner symphonies long before they became popular, and his recordings of these works are still regarded as definitive recordings today. He is also a keen student of the works of his contemporaries, showing a keen sensitivity to Schoenberg, Hindemith, and Bartók.
