Male Vocal Ensemble "De Profundis" Makes Its Debut with CORO! The Sequel to the Morales Project Begins! Launched in 2022, the "Morales Project" is a major initiative aiming to record the complete Masses and Magnificats of Cristóbal de Morales, the master of Spanish Renaissance music. "De Profundis," a male vocal ensemble specializing in Renaissance music founded in 2011 by Mark Doolish—who previously performed as a member of I Fagiolini and the Cambridge Taverner Choir—is now embarking on a new series under the CORO label. The anonymous melody “L’hommearme” (The Armed Man) was widely used in 15th- and 16th-century Europe and served as a structural and melodic source of inspiration for many composers when writing Masses. While the exact reason for this melody’s enduring popularity remains unclear, its striking, memorable melody and powerfully lyrical themes have been appreciated by many composers, from Guillaume Dufay to Giacomo Carissimi. This album features two Masses based on this melody and the magnificent *Magnificat in the Second Mode*, conveying the rich charm of Morales’s sacred works. De Profundis is a male vocal ensemble characterized by an all-adult male lineup and performances in the original lower pitch, in accordance with the conventions of the time. Praised as “first-rate” by The Guardian, the group has established a global reputation, having won awards such as the “Diapason d’Or” and “Gramophone Critics’ Choice” for its previous series released on the Hyperion label. This project is a grand undertaking to release 10 albums over the next 10 years via CORO, thereby completing the definitive recording of Morales’s monumental works. Tokyo M Plus
