Sir Simon Rattle

Rattle & LSO's Third Janacek Opera A cast of the highest profile Rattle draws maximum output from LSO with outstanding rhythm Jenufa" depicts human suffering and redemption Honorary Conductor Sir Simon Rattle and the LSO present "Jenufa," a tale of human suffering and redemption. This is the third in the Janacek Opera Series, following "The Story of the Clever Vixen" (LSO-0850/2020) and "Katya Kabanová" (LSO-0889/2024). Janacek began composing his third opera, "Jenufa," in 1894, pausing for a time to work on his vast collection of Moravian folk songs. Then his daughter Olga became deathly ill, and she showed a keen interest in the opera Janacek was working on. Janacek may have projected his own daughter's suffering onto Jenufa's suffering. Janacek's daughter died before she could see the opera performed, and the dedication to her memory appears in Janacek's score. The first performance took place in January 1904. The opera Yenouffa, a passionate and grandiose opera, depicts a woman's limited choices in a stifling small town. The main character Yenoufa is unmarried, pregnant with her cousin Shuteva's child, and gives birth in secret. The story is one of tragedy: the child's father, Shteva, refuses to marry her, Yenoufa's stepmother, Kostelnicka, kills the baby, and she ultimately decides to move on with her life with Lazza, who has feelings for Yenoufa. Janacek spent many years thinking about the plight of his characters, and the opera he ultimately completed is a story about human suffering and redemption as it unfolds in everyday life. In "Jenufa," Janacek's characters are clearly distinguished by the music they sing. The lyrics are in a conversational style, and Janacek's music is designed to accentuate the differences between the characters, with a melody that makes use of natural intonation, lyricism for the main character Jenufa, and a prickly belligerence for Kostelnicka. The orchestral writing also enhances the story. Furthermore, the tempo setting to match the dramatic development also adds to the tension and intensity. The remarkable cast includes Agneta Eichenholz's heartbreaking portrayal of a vulnerable young woman singing Yenoufa and Katharina Karneus's achingly powerful Kostelnicka. Rattle's superb music, with its bare depiction of human emotions, and outstanding rhythm, draws maximum output power from each part of the LSO. LSO LIVE
