Brahms in the 21st century? I have never heard Brahms like this. Gergiev's unique interpretation of Brahms's symphonies is a novel first attempt. Gergiev and the London Symphony Orchestra have performed the symphonies of Szymanowski and Brahms in contrast in the 2012 season. The two composers, one a Polish modernist and the other a pure German Romantic, have nothing in common except that they have written four symphonies together, but this is Gergiev's first time performing both. This time it is the long-awaited Brahms. The Brahms symphonies sounded interesting, considering Gergiev's musicality and qualities, but the only recordings of Brahms' symphonies were his concertos and German Requiem. This is a fully-fledged performance. Gergiev's personality is most strongly expressed in Symphony No. 1. The tone is dark and the strong accents are fresh, like Russian music.The bass-heavy finale, especially the coda, is a surprisingly sonorous transposition of a Russian Orthodox chorus into an orchestra. The Second Symphony is supposed to be a peaceful, rural work, but it is tinged with a strange sense of foreboding and disquiet. Gergiev depicts a dramatic image of the work, departing from tradition and convention. The final movement has a wonderful acceleration that could only come from Gergiev. The enthusiasm that moves toward the glorious affirmation at the end is very moving. In the "Variations on a Theme by Haydn," the skillful characterization of each variation shines through. The lighthearted fifth variation, like Mendelssohn's scherzo, the bright wind sixth variation, the elegant and lively seventh variation, and the eerily subdued eighth variation lead the majestic "Chorale of St. Antonius" in a moving manner.
