Thielemann & SKD Schumann Symphonies Complete CollectionThe live video of Christian Thielemann and the Staatskapelle Dresden's performance at Tokyo's Suntory Hall in the fall of 2018 is now available. The Japan concert was the final stop on an Asian tour that took the Schumann symphonies down to Beijing, Guangzhou, and Macau. Schumann's symphonies were an important group of works that Thielemann frequently performed in his early years. The first symphony was premiered in the spring of 1841, the year after Schumann's marriage to Clara, and marked Schumann's first step as a symphony writer. The second, completed during his illness when he moved from Leipzig to Dresden. The third symphony, which was inspired by the Cologne Cathedral, is effectively his last symphony, although it is number three in the order of its publication. No. 4 was also composed second (1841), but a revised version (first performed in 1853) was published as No. 4. It was given to Clara as a birthday present. The Staatskapelle Dresden is characterized by a string section that is both thick and soft, a dusky and distinctive woodwind sound, and a solid ensemble that is trained in opera.Thielemann's propulsive and overwhelming energy is added to the performance to create a stunning performance.
